Nutrition Tips for Healthy Natural Hair Growth

Extensions are a wonderful thing, but they aren't immortal. Even the finest human hair has been cut, processed and coloured, then handled far more than the hair growing out of your scalp — and the attachment method holding it in place takes a beating too. Add daily brushing, heat styling, washing and sleeping, and it's only sensible that each set ages.
Three things drive replacement timing: how long the attachment point can stay secure, how quickly the hair itself dries out or becomes tatty, and how well your own natural hair is coping underneath. That's why your stylist's advice always trumps a general rule of thumb — they can see and feel what's actually happening up close.
Tape-ins are among the most popular choices because they're light, flat and quick to fit. The trade-off is that the adhesive webbing has a limited working life. Expect to be back in the chair every six to eight weeks, when the old tapes are removed, your natural hair is cleaned thoroughly, and the panels are re-taped and refitted.
That's maintenance, not replacement. The hair itself usually lasts four to six months before the ends look thin, the texture dulls, or the strands shed out to the point where coverage suffers. At that stage a fresh set is the better investment. If you wear tape-ins constantly, book a full replacement at around four months; if you take breaks between fittings, five or six months is realistic.
Micro-ring, micro-link and I-tip extensions don't rely on glue, which is a real plus for sensitive scalps. Individual strands are clamped into place with tiny silicone-lined rings, giving beautifully natural movement. The rings do slip, however, as your hair grows and as washing loosens them.
Micro-rings place tension on small sections of your own hair, so never stretch the timeline to save money. Overdue strands can pull, tangle at the root and, in the worst cases, cause breakage.
Here's the good news: clip-ins aren't attached, so there's no adhesive to age and nothing to loosen. A quality human hair set worn two or three times a week should comfortably last six to twelve months. With gentle handling, sulphate-free washing and heat kept low, many people get well past a year, and eighteen months isn't unheard of.
The most common mistake is over-washing. Clip-ins don't collect scalp oils and product the way fitted extensions do, so wash them roughly every ten to fifteen wears rather than after each outing. Store them somewhere cool and dry, ideally on a hanger or in a satin pouch, and detangle with a wide-tooth comb working from the ends upwards. Synthetic clip-ins are a different story: they tangle faster and typically need replacing every two to three months.
Sewn-in or beaded weft rows usually need tightening every six to eight weeks. The weft hair can often be reused for two or three appointments, giving a total lifespan of roughly six to twelve months.
Keratin bonds are re-bonded every eight to twelve weeks and fully replaced every four to six months. Halo extensions, since they're worn only occasionally, can easily last a year or more — just keep them clean and stored flat to avoid kinks in the hair.
Book a replacement when you notice any of the following:
To get the longest life from any set, use sulphate-free shampoo, apply conditioner from mid-length to ends only and keep it well away from bonds and rings, and let hair air-dry whenever you can. Always use a heat protectant, keep irons below 180°C and never run them over the attachment points. Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase, tie hair into a loose plait at night, and brush twice daily with a loop or soft-bristle brush.
Most importantly, keep your maintenance appointments. Turning up on time is the single best way to protect your natural hair and to know exactly when a set is ready to be retired. Your stylist will tell you honestly — and if you're unsure between visits, send them a photo or pop in for a quick check.
